Variations on Themes from Lost and Found: Scenes from a Life and other works by John Bernd was originally conceived and performed as part of Danspace Project’s Platform 2016: Lost and Found. Its 2023 reprisal continues to explore and recover the legacies of a generation of artists lost from AIDS complications, centering the choreography and writing of John Bernd, a performance artist active in New York City’s downtown dance scene during the 1980s. Bernd’s piece Surviving Love and Death, performed at Performance Space 122 in 1981, is one of the earliest performance works to address HIV/AIDS, before it even had a name. Co-directed by Miguel Gutierrez and Ishmael Houston-Jones, a friend, collaborator, and caregiver of John Bernd’s, Variations collages and reshapes his body of work, carrying its spirit into the present. ....

BECKET When MOMA invited Adam Weinert to reconstruct some of Ted Shawn’s early solo works in 2013 as part of its 20 Dancers for the XX Century dance program, he seized the opportunity. Like many male dancers, he feels indebted to the modern dance pioneer for forging a pathway for male bodies in that art form. Ted Shawn and his Men Dancers performed only until 1940, and Weinert speculates that it is perhaps because of the interruption of two world wars that Shawn’s work wasn’t “passed body to body” as it was for his contemporary Isadora Duncan and student Martha Graham. Since there was no one from whom Weinert could learn Shawn’s choreography, he undertook his reconstruction “from the outside in.” He began at the source. ....

2021 La MaMa Moves! Dance Festival Announced for May

La MaMa has announced the lineup for the 16th edition of La MaMa Moves! Returning for its annual spring season for two weeks in May, the 2021 festival will feature works by Hadar Ahuvia and Tatyana Tenenbaum, J. Bouey, Jasmine Hearn, Tiffany Mills, Ricarrdo Valentine, and Sugar Vendil. Performances will be streamed live from La MaMa s Ellen Stewart Theatre and Downstairs Theatre, with additional performances outdoors at Downtown Art for limited, in-person audiences. The festival will also include a digital showcase featuring the work of several International Artists. La MaMa Moves! will take place Thursday through Sunday, May 13-16, and Tuesday through Sunday, May 18-23. Performance times vary. Tickets are pay-what-you-can starting at $5.
