Pamplin Media Group - Opinion: Police reforms need a more reasoned approach by everyone

One of the primary responsibilities of government at any level is to provide a safe environment for its population. In the past year, our city has reduced the Portland Police Bureau budget by $27 million and is seeking a 5% reduction across all bureaus in the next fiscal year, including the police.
Police Chief Chuck Lovell has requested that the bureau budget be cut by only 1% to allow for the filling of more than 100 vacancies. Reducing the police bureau budget by 5% at this time is inadvisable, and City Council should heed that request. ....

Pamplin Media Group - Rejection is always out there, but it doesn't have to beat you

Rejection is always out there, but it doesn t have to beat you
February 17 2021
I have another the bad-news letters in my newspaper file, but they don t bother me nearly so much as they used to.
If you were raised the way I was, it s quite possible you weren t expected to amount to much. It was made clear as I approached high school graduation that I was not likely to go to college, because (A) I had terrible grades (a 1.75 GPA, which is a high D), and (B) nobody in our family had the money to pay for college.
I should also add here that if my parents were to hear that I was in trouble with a teacher, principal, coach, bus driver or anyone else in any position of authority, their reaction was always, OK, what did you do this time? ....

Oregon has become one of the first states to report people contracting COVID-19 after being fully vaccinated.
The announcement is not a surprise to health officials, who remind people there is no vaccine that is 100% effective at preventing infections, and the COVID-19 vaccine can help lessen the severity of symptoms to those who contract it. ....

Pamplin Media Group - Readers letters: State vaccine priorities really stink

Pamplin Media Group
February 10 2021
This is poor leadership, without a moral center, and sets a bad and unwise precedent for us today as well as for future generations looking back on our time for guidance.
I am disappointed (to say the least) in Gov. Kate Brown and the Oregon Health Authority in downgrading the priority of seniors to receive the COVID-19 vaccines from the federal recommendations.
And then there is the chaos with the OHA website and the lack of planning that went into the mechanisms for distributing the vaccines in Oregon.
Other states are already vaccinating seniors but Oregon apparently is playing favorite to those pushing for the schools to re-open. That Oregon s seniors are being reduced in status and endangered by the delay seems an awful lot like age discrimination. ....
