Cape Town – The Western Cape National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is mourning the death of three staff members in one week.
Advocate Vukile Gontsana, who recently joined the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions as a State advocate, was gunned down in Kleinvlei while in his vehicle on Saturday, NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said in a statement. Gontsana is believed to have been moonlighting as an e-hailing driver.
Police are investigating Gontsana’s murder. His assailants fled the scene at 12.45pm in Stadenberg Street, Palm Park, and have not yet been arrested. ....

THE State has applied to reopen its case in the murder trial against Melvin Volkwyn, for the sole purpose of clarifying new evidence brought about by the defence.
The defence closed their case at the Western Cape High Court on Thursday before the State requested the court to call the mother and father of slain toddler, Orderick Lucas.
This is to deal with evidence which implied that the childâs mother Davidene Lucas had the toddler with her the night before he disappeared.
However, state prosecutor Mornay Julius, when requesting the court to call the witnesses to court, had initially not done so under the correct section of the Criminal Procedure Act, the court heard. ....

Witness Locrisia Goliath (36) took the stand on Wednesday, 28 April, after advocate Susana Kuun, for the defence, told the court about new developments in the trial of Melvin Volkwyn, accused of murdering Orderick Lucas in March 2019 in Kleinvlei outside Cape Town.
The state contends the deceased was last seen alive in the presence of the accused. The boy went missing on 25 March 2019, but was only reported missing on 28 March. His body was found on 2 April in a stormwater drain in Kleinvlei.
