Taking Toa to his final resting place: Tangaroa had his way with him in the end

Porirua man Ezra Jennings-Tedro was one of the scores of volunteers who kept Toa company . Members of the Hongoeka whānau of local iwi Ngāti Toa Rangatira were there too, including Justin Stretch, Sandra McGill and Rongoa Richmond. After receiving an urgent call from Visser explaining Toa’s condition was in rapid decline, the trio slapped on their wetsuits and rushed to Toa’s sea pen at Plimmerton Boating Club, a pen he had only returned to two days earlier. “It was starting to look like things were going downhill,” Stretch said. With many of the regular volunteers already in the water, they waded in beside the orca, with Stretch and Richmond immediately moving to cradle Toa’s head.

Stranded baby orca Toa s pod sighted off Kāpiti Coast, but wild weather delays reunion

“At the moment any reunion attempt would be too dangerous, for both the people involved and the orca calf,” Angus said. “Once conditions improve we will be in a better position to investigate the sighting further and make a plan from there.” Angus said people should not travel out to search for the pod themselves during this storm. Toa has now been away for his pod for a week after he got run aground on rocks at Hongoeka. He was just a baby, at an estimated four to six months old – orca calves are not fully weaned for up to a year.

5pm update on stranded juvenile orca in Porirua

Date Time 5pm update on stranded juvenile orca in Porirua The orca calf – believed to be between four and six months old – stranded on rocks at Plimmerton on Sunday afternoon. It is in a temporary enclosure near a wharf at Hongoeka, with volunteers from Whale Rescue/Orca Rescue Trust working alongside Department of Conservation (DOC) and local iwi Ngati Toa Rangatira. Ian Angus, DOC Marine Species Manager, says the two reported sightings of a pod off the Kapiti Coast – including a sighting this morning near Kapiti Island – have not been verified despite searching. The latest sighting, reported today, occurred off the coast of Taranaki. It is not known if the orca pod is the same one the stranded calf has come from, so DOC, Whale Rescue/Orca Rescue and local iwi Ngati Toa are seeking to confirm the sighting before further decisions are made.
