HIV Inflammation Linked to Higher Smoking Intensity and Duration

HIV Inflammation Linked to Higher Smoking Intensity and Duration

Research, carried out by Krishna Poudel and colleagues, has found positive linear relationships between inflammation and the intensity, duration, and pack-years of smoking in HIV-positive people.
Poudel says the study s findings suggest that people living with HIV would benefit not just from quitting smoking but from smoking less. He also points out that a high level of inflammation is associated with a greater risk of disease and death in HIV-positive people.
While it is important to support and encourage people living with HIV to quit smoking ultimately, it is also important to suggest they reduce the frequency of smoking until they can fully quit. That would also help their health status by reducing inflammation, he adds. ....

Heart Arrhythmia Can Be Treated Effectively With The Aid Of OpenEP Platform

Heart Arrhythmia Can Be Treated Effectively With The Aid Of OpenEP Platform

Frontiers in Physiology.
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a heart condition that is characterized by an
irregular and often fast heartbeat. Major symptoms include breathlessness, palpitations, and fatigue. AF is a major contributor to stroke and heart failure.
The
OpenEP platform is capable of analyzing 90 % of the contemporary electrophysiology studies, thus lowers the barriers of entry to electrophysiology research. The platform also enables the researchers to focus on their specific hypothesis or research question. This standardized way of using data processing techniques allows for an ....

A Natural Substance In The Blood May Aid In Treating Pregnancy-Related Complications

Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University.
A
special protein-carbohydrate molecule - trophoblastic β1-glycoprotein, that regulates the congenital and adaptive (or acquired) immunity is found in the blood of pregnant women. It is due to these cells that the woman s body
does not adversely react to the fetus as a source of antigens and rather normal development is supported until its birth.
Natural Defence System
‘A special protein-carbohydrate molecule – trophoblastic β1-glycoprotein in the blood of pregnant women has the ability to fight pathological immune reaction via its action on pro-inflammatory immune cells. This may aid in the development of medicinal drugs for pregnancy maintenance, treat its complications, and also in the treatment of various autoimmune diseases.’ ....

Phase 1 Clinical Trial Confirms HIV Vaccine Approach

Phase 1 Clinical Trial Confirms HIV Vaccine Approach
by Angela Mohan on
February 4, 2021 at 11:12 AM
Phase 1 clinical trial testing a novel vaccine against HIV has produced promising results, IAVI and Scripps Research announced. The vaccine showed success in stimulating production of rare immune cells needed to start the process of generating antibodies against the fast-mutating virus; the targeted response was detected in 97 percent of participants who received the vaccine.
This study demonstrates proof of principle for a new vaccine concept for HIV, a concept that could be applied to other pathogens, as well, says William Schief, Ph.D., a professor and immunologist at Scripps Research and executive director of vaccine design at IAVI s Neutralizing Antibody Center, whose laboratory developed the vaccine. ....
