A New Zealander and Canadian have today been jailed for over 37 years between them after the biggest ever methamphetamine seizure at Aotearoa’s border.

Canadian The Hoang Thai, 25, was sentenced to 20 years and six months imprisonment while New Zealander Isaiah Te Hira, 32, was sentenced to 16 years and nine months.
Their sentences come after they were arrested in September 2019 following a Customs seizure of 469 kilograms of methamphetamine hidden in a shipment of electrical motors from Thailand. ....

Canadian The Hoang Thai, 25, has been sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison while New Zealander Isaiah Te Hira, 32, has been sentenced to 16 years and nine months in prison
The 469kg of methamphetamine, hidden in a shipment of electric motors sent from Thailand, was uncovered as a result of Operation Manta, a Customs-led investigation into an overseas criminal syndicate that was looking to expand its network into New Zealand.
The investigation began in mid-2019 and identified several people who had travelled to New Zealand to receive and distribute drug shipments, setting up a pseudo company to do so, Customs says in a statement. ....
