Duke of Edinburgh’s Award continues despite lockdown 5th May 2021
The lockdown measures resulting from Covid-19 impacted upon everyone’s lives, including those youngsters enrolled on the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in Gibraltar.
But due to the flexibility allowed by the International Award Foundation and the National Award Operator, some participants were able to pursue several activities online, as well as in the local community.
One of the Award sections is the ‘voluntary service’ which requires participants to volunteer, for at least one hour a week over a set period, to assist someone or a particular group within the community. During the lockdown in Gibraltar, local children and their families prepared themselves to undertake schoolwork once again from home.

The DofE awards support young people to learn and develop skills by completing four sections to receive their bronze, silver and gold awards. The sections are: skills, physical, volunteering and an expedition. Bex Swan, youth work manager, said, “The team at Network Ryde are so proud of the young people achieving their awards, especially as many of them have had to adapt the activities within their sections due to the pandemic.
‘Make a change’ initiative to support school children launched 10th January 2021
In a weekend just as children prepare for their return to school, albeit it will be online whilst the lockdown in Gibraltar continues, members of the rugby team Rock Scorpions have launched an initiative to assist home learning.
Under the banner “make a change” the club has formed the Scorpions Rugby Collective Network, an initiative asking people to donate their old working laptops.
Inspired by Alexa Tilbury-Chang, Harvey Leroy and Preston Feeke currently participating in The Duke of Edinburgh s International Award Gibraltar the club is now calling on the public to donate their unwanted laptops to help children who haven’t got the resources to follow the curriculum online.
