OPINION | James Hales: School days in 1950s-70s remembered at museum meeting

The Rogers History Club met on Sept. 16, 2021, at the Rogers Historical Museum for a program jointly sponsored by the museum and the Friends of the Rogers Historical Museum. The program, "School Days in Rogers," consisted of speakers Bob Ross, Bonnie Deason, Mayor Greg Hines and Sue Fleming. The participants related their fond memories of school days in Rogers from the 1950s through the 1970s. The large audience was welcomed by Friends Board President, Sandy Chalmers, who taught school in Rogers for several decades until she retired. The introduction was by Karen Russell Burks, who attended and graduated from Rogers High School. Her family were prominent business leaders who owned Russell s Five & Dime, the Hillcrest Motel, and other ventures.

OPINION | James Hales: Downtown Rogers remembered in 1981

Last month, the Remembering Rogers column was about the year 1956, the Diamond Jubilee of the birth of Rogers. This column jumps ahead 25 years to the year 1981 the centennial year of Rogers. It is interesting to look back and notice some of the major changes in Rogers and its citizens over that period.

BECK: Power still found in prayer

More By allowing ads to appear on this site, you support the local businesses who, in turn, support great journalism. BECK: Power still found in prayer Taylor Beck Covington Police Chief Stacey Cotton nearly brought me to tears Tuesday afternoon, and he didn’t even realize it. He spoke briefly at the end of our weekly Rotary Club of Covington meeting, but I was not able to attend in person. Rather, I was listening in via Zoom. Stacey requested prayers for one of the law enforcement officers that was shot this week in Carroll County. He said the officer was shot in the head, which brought back memories of Matt Cooper’s situation a couple of years ago.
