'Get the first vaccine that you can get': NACI recommendations could lead to vaccine hesitancy, UW expert says

KITCHENER
The recommendations from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) issued on Monday are broad and may contribute to vaccine hesitancy in Waterloo Region according to a vaccine specialist at the University of Waterloo.
In an interview with CTV News on Tuesday, Dr. Kelly Grindrod, an Associate Professor with the School of Pharmacy at the University of Waterloo, suggested communication from the NACI may cause confusion and lead some people to avoid or delay getting a COVID-19 vaccine.
“We absolutely have a lot of virus in Waterloo Region. It seems to be trending in the right way but, we’re by no means out of the woods,” said Grindrod. “I think in regions that have hotspot neighbourhoods, the message continues to be – if you can get a vaccine, get the first vaccine you can get.” ....

Toronto will wait for Ontario COVID-19 booking portal to come online before vaccinating seniors

TORONTO
Toronto will not begin a mass registration of its seniors for COVID-19 vaccination for at least another 12 days because it is waiting for a centrally-run registration program set up by the province to come online, Mayor John Tory said Wednesday.
“We have chosen I think wisely to be part of provincial registration and scheduling system which isn’t up and running until March 15,” Tory told CP24 on Wednesday.
Unlike its smaller neighbouring public health regions such as York, Peel and Halton which all began registering those 80 and up for shots and administering them this week, Tory says the sheer size of the city’s elderly population, coupled with the concentration of healthcare workers that live in the city, dictate that Toronto will be slower than the rest of the GTA in reaching its seniors for vaccination. ....

Premier Ford unhappy to learn province will receive no Pfizer doses next week Back to video
Ontario breathed a sigh of some relief Tuesday when instead of witnessing rising numbers, daily counts actually went down substantially.
Health officials recorded 1,913 daily cases, the lowest since mid-December and far below the record high of over 4,000 cases in a single day in early January.
There were 46 deaths reported Tuesday for a total provincial COVID-19 death toll since the pandemic began of 5,479.
Premier Doug Ford, meanwhile, expressed anger in a daily briefing from Queen’s Park upon learning early Tuesday the province will be short of about 80,000 vaccines next week because Pfizer won’t be sending any doses as it retools its facilities in Puurs, Belgium to boost production long term. ....
