Letter to the editor: Study candidates before voting

The recent election of Eric Whitfield to the Onslow County School Board acts as a case study in why school board elections should be non-partisan. According to the Daily News (November 13th), Mr. Whitfield was fired from his job at Jacksonville Christian Academy for a Facebook post that referred to African Americans as “ignorant darkies”. (There’s more…read the article.) Why was he elected? Because he had an R after his name. Three incumbents went to Herculean efforts to run this time as unaffiliated candidates because of their belief in a non-partisan board. This process involves collecting a large number of signatures county-wide to secure a place on the ballot. Why did they lose? Because they did not have an R after their name. So, here we are. Those unaffiliated incumbents (to include the Chairwoman of the Board) will be replaced by two Republican newcomers and Mr. Whitfield. All of that previous experie
