One Hundred and Four Years Ago: At noon on May 15, 1917, Syracuse’s most prominent citizens, including Lt. Gov. Shoeneck, Mayor Stone, former governor Horace White, Syracuse University Chancellor Day, and business moguls like Franklin, Chapin, Nettleton, and Soule, gathered in the Hiawatha Room at the sumptuous Onondaga Hotel to host a luncheon for Maj. 100 Years ago Sure, let em smoke
Smack dab in the middle of the front page was this headline: “Girls, You May Now Smoke in Albany Hotels Most of You Don’t Want to, Both The Ten Eyck and Hampton Find, but the Privilege Is Yours If You Want to Exercise It.” According to managements at those and other hotels in the city, no woman had thus far “gone quite so ahead or behind as her sisters in London and publicly hit the pipe,” although an occasional woman or girl had smoked a cigarette at both establishments, generally during the after-theater hours.
Onondaga in southwestern Ingham County is an unincorporated community.and historic as well. Onondaga was named after the Iroquois nation of Native Americans, who were mainly based in New York.
The first settler in the town of Onondaga was from the New York area: Oliver Booth arrived in 1834.when he passed away, he became the first death in town as well. When his wife Harriet gave birth to a girl on Christmas Day, their daughter Hannah became the first female born in town.
A post office soon followed, established in 1844. Onondaga s first doctor was Hiram Frye, practicing from the 1840 s until 1877. The Onondaga Hotel was erected in 1847-1848 which also housed the post office and a grocery store. In 1867 Onondaga s first major general store was opened, with many dry goods and mercantile.
