More than $2.3 million of student and teacher devices and $460,000-plus in  software for virtual learning were the focus Jackson-Madison County School System used to reopen schools in 2020 thanks to federal grant money.
Dozens of projects to address learning loss, technology and other school projects made up most of JMCSS’ $16.7 million in grant spending in the following months.
With a third allocation of grant money totaling over $37 million in hand, JMCSS leaders say the district will spend more than the 20% required of it to address learning loss. ....

Madison Co. Commission: Sheriff's office policy change, school board appointee

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. It looks like sheriff’s office employees won’t be able to bank their holiday pay anymore. That was voted on in Monday’s county commission meeting.
“So it’s hard to get people to take their holiday pay,” Madison County Sheriff John Mehr stated.
Previously, employees who work on holidays could bank that time and cash out when they leave the department, when their pay is higher than when they earned it. The county still has $1.3 million they need to pay for this too.
“So it’s just a way to pay as we go so we don’t end up with a big lump sum we have to come up with at some point,” Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris said. ....

Union professor Ken Newman replacing O'Neal Henley on JMCSS board


A Union University professor, who started his educational career in Jackson-Madison County Schools with teaching and administrative roles, will take a vacated school board seat until the August 2022 general election.
The Madison County Commission appointed educational leadership professor Ken Newman to the District 2 school board seat, vacated by board member O’Neal Henley’s resignation. Henley was elected in August 2020, meaning the person elected to the seat in 2022 will serve until 2024.
“I am very humbled and appreciative of their support and trust in me,” Newman said after the commission s appointment. “I’m going to do the best I can do.” ....
