There were just four survivors, rescued by a Merchant Vessel and then handed over to the italian coastguard. the wildfires in southern portugal are being brought under control, but there are fears winds could fan more flames, amid unusually high temperatures, in the middle of a ferocious heatwave. it s been 46.4 degrees celsius at times this week. of course, portugal is only the latest country to experience a devastating summer of wildfires. last month, on the greek island of rhodes, thousands of locals and tourists had to flee their homes and hotels. on la palma, in the spanish canary islands, same story. mass evacuations. and further afield in canada, the smoke was so bad from forest fires, it drifted down as far as new york, turning the sky orange. back in europe, let s get the very latest from portugal with jenny hill. scorched earth still smouldering. the fires consumed 40 square miles of land. here, flames swept up the valley, right up
i have never seen so much styrofoam in my entire life. we start this week in the canary islands, and in particular, on la palma, which saw 85 days of volcanic eruptions this winter, devastating for a little island that relies so heavily on tourism. 7000 people were forced to leave their homes. 3000 properties were destroyed by the lava flows. but now, the dust has literally settled, we went to see
of explosions. they say the force of these explosions as it hits the water, plus what s going on with the volcano itself, the eruptions, that could shatter glass in your house windows in a radius of five kilometers or three miles. so people are on edge. again, this has been an up-and-down situation where there have been more intense eruptions and explosions, lesser, now, we re back to a more intense phase as you mentioned. the airplanes, again, flights cancelled by spain s airport operator saying flights in and out have been cancelled. um, they were on again, off again yesterday. they were cancelled on saturday. these more than 6,000 people evacuated are safe. the authorities are happy to report in the midst of all of this that there have been, so far, no reported injuries or deaths. all of this happening, rosemary, on la palma which is one of the smaller of spain s canary islands in the atlantic ocean off the northwest coast of morocco. the spaniards like to call it the east la boni
earth tremors and further lava flows which suggest this spectacular show will not be open any time soon. over any time soon. on la palma s volcanic hill sides it is time to move. more families and more communities are packing up and getting out. i don t even know where to take my things, this woman says. we were allowed to drive the road to a village evacuated on sunday, now being cleared by its residents in a last dash to grab whatever they can before the lava consumes their homes. the flames and the lava are really close, that s why there s such a risk to these properties, and why people are making every effort to get out. being here forjust a couple of minutes, you get a sense of the risk, because there s ash falling on my clothes, i can taste it in the air, and the whole time, there s the thunderous rumble of the volcano in the background, so that is why people are loading up and going.
