Potential to provide 140,000 jobs in Oman: Minister of Labour | Times of Oman

Muscat: There are more than 140,000 jobs in the Sultanate where expatriate workers can be replaced by citizens, in both the public and private sectors,  H.E. Dr. Mahad bin Said bin Ali Ba’owain, the Minister of Labour said on Tuesday.
He said in interview with Oman TV: “Currently, there are 1,500,000 expatriate workers in Oman and 10 per cent can be replaced with Omani employees. The remaining jobs are for low paying positions and we cannot pressure employers to replace the rest. With this 10 per cent, we have around 140,000 jobs to 180,000 job opportunities for Omani citizens. The process requires training and some jobs need experience. We will work hard to achieve this goal.” ....

Encourage Omanis to work in private sector

The differences in privileges between public and private sectors have already been reduced, and more efforts are underway.
Muscat: To encourage more nationals to enter the private sector, efforts are on to match the minimum wages given to public sector employees with those at private sector, a senior official of Ministry of Labour said.
Omanis joining the private sector will find good opportunities for growth, and will learn plenty of skills hands-on that will benefit them throughout their careers.
“We have plans to train, qualify and prepare nationals to take up senior and mid-level roles in the private sector,” said a Ministry of Labour official. “This was part of the implementation plan announced by the ministry as part of its executive plan for 2021, which was made public last January. ....
