The City of Helsinki today announces a competition that invites proposals for the redevelopment of Makasiiniranta at South Harbour, the last old harbour area to be transformed for public use in Helsinki. The initial period for participant enrolment - intended for operators in the construction, architecture and real estate industry - covers a six-week timeframe, open until 21 June 2021, with the inclusion of a new site for the design and architecture museum as a vital aspect of the land use plan along the city’s shoreline.

Launch: Development consortiums which have the technical, economic and functional experience to plan and implement a demanding and high-quality construction project are invited to register for the competition by 21 June. ....

An international competition has been launched to design the masterplan for the redevelopment of a historic harbour district in Helsinki.
The two-stage competition is calling for architects, contractors and developers to provide a new vision for the Finnish capital’s South Harbour, the last waterside part of the city centre to be transformed for public use.
The 83,000sq m competition area, which is currently used for port operations, includes the site once earmarked for a £110m Guggenheim museum.
But the scheme, which was won by French practice Moreau Kusunoki Architects, was eventually binned after Helsinkians rejected the idea of such a significant site being given to a global museum chain. ....

Helsinki calls for proposals to transform Makasiiniranta port into cultural precinct
The city of Helsinki has launched a competition to create a new waterfront cultural and leisure district on the South Harbour, which will include a design and architecture museum complex.
The Makasiiniranta area is the last remaining section of old harbour cut off from public use and is currently home to terminals and parking.
