South Moor pupils join a treemendous record-breaking bid

A County Durham school has been created hundreds of paper treeas as part of a world record challenge to raise awareness of climate change.
Durham County Council’s international relations team has been working with St Mary’s RC School, in South Moor, near Stanley, in the bid.
The attempt is being made by an Austrian school, which asked counterparts across the globe to send in their creations to create the world’s longest chain of paper trees.
Gratkorn elementary school, in Styria, will be using the record attempt as an opportunity to create a “climate-friendly world record forest” where one real tree will be planted for every 50 paper trees they receive. ....

14-year-old Cameron died after jumping in the river - now his mother wants to stop further tragedy


A MOTHER who lost her son from cold water shock has spoken of her fears that an influx of people heading to rivers once coronavirus restrictions are lifted will lead to further tragedy and other families torn apart.
Cameron Gosling, 14, from Crook, died of cold-water shock after jumping into the River Wear near Bishop Auckland, on July 5, 2015. The shock of the cold water caused his heart to stop.
Since then, his mother, Fiona Gosling, she has done all she can to campaign in schools in County Durham about the importance of being safe around water.
Mrs Gosling, who is part of Durham County Council’s ‘Dying to be cool’ campaign, has spoken out of her concerns that people will be rushing to Durham’s lakes and rivers this summer, and how lockdown restrictions have prevented her visiting schools to get her message across. ....

County Durham: New £34m school campus moves a step closer


Rt Revd Paul Butler, the Bishop of Durham, said: “I am delighted to hear the news that Cabinet has approved a new building for one of our primary schools
HEADTEACHERS and the Bishop of Durham have welcomed an important step forward in plans to create a multimillion-pound campus for two North-East schools.
Durham County Council’s Cabinet backed a £34 million investment in new buildings and a joint campus for Belmont Community School and Belmont Church of England Primary School.
Since 2014, the condition of these schools has been a cause of growing concern to the council, local councillors, school leaders and governors. ....
