Schools' Resumption: Ensuring the Safety of Nigerian Varsities Amidst Covid-19


With the directive by the federal government that schools across the country, should resume despite the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic which has led to an increase in the number of cases, the management of some universities explained to Funmi Ogundare the efforts they have taken to prevent the spread of the virus among students and staff
Penultimate week, the Federal Government gave a directive that schools across the country should reopen. The decision was taken at a meeting that had governors, commissioners and other stakeholders, where a consensus was reached.
Despite the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic which has led to an increase in the number of cases, the federal government had directed the management of individual federal government-owned tertiary institutions to resume academic activities while putting in place safety protocols and guidelines laid down by the Presidential Task Force (PTF). ....

Online learning hitches: UNILAG advises students on traffic control -

Following the hitches that trailed the first day of the online learning system adopted at the University of Lagos, UNILAG, the management has advised students on what to do to ensure a seamless experience on the platform.
This followed the observation that many students found it hard to connect with the platform on Monday, the first day of its use.
According to the Head of the Information Unit, Mrs. Olufadeke Akinleye, on Tuesday, the hitches were a result of many students wanting to access the facility at the same time, even when it was not time for them to attend any lecture. ....

The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has disclaimed rumour that it would be charging its returning students a sum of fifty thousand naira, N50,000, for online lectures and examinations.
The school also reiterated its readiness to commence online lectures on January 25.
A press statement posted on the school’s official website titled: “DISCLAIMER: UNILAG RESUMPTION IS ABSOLUTELY FREE” reads; “The Management of University of Lagos wishes to inform all students, parents and the general public, that a notice on the internet purporting that returning students of the University of Lagos are to pay a sum of ₦50,000 for online lectures and examinations, is FALSE and should be disregarded. ....

UNILAG denies charging N50,000 for online classes ahead of resumption


In a statement released on Wednesday, January 13, 2021, the university’s Head of the Media Unit,
Mrs Olufadeke Akinleye said the institution would commence online classes on the announced date due to the second wave of COVID-19.
However, days after the university revised its academic calendar, a report claimed that returning students are expected to pay N50,000 for classes.
Reacting to this, the institution in a statement titled, ‘Disclaimer: UNILAG resumption is absolutely free’, urged students and parents to ignore the claim, saying lectures would commence on January 25, at no cost.
