ANN ARBOR, Mich. — University of Michigan Regents Emeritus have released a statement responding to comments made by Regent Ron Weiser, saying they’re appalled by his comments referencing the state’s governor, secretary of state and attorney general as “witches.”
The statement also said speculating that “assassination could be a way to remove” Congressmen Fred Upton and Peter Meijer after they voted to impeach former President Donald Trump was an incitement of violence.
“To be clear, no matter how much we find Mr. Weiser’s remarks to be abhorrent, he has a First Amendment right to his views,” the statement said. “That doesn’t mean that if he believes that he is free to denigrate women with whom he disagrees by calling them “witches” and if he encourages assass ....

U-M regents weigh censure vote on Ron Weiser over 'witch' comments


Though symbolic, a vote to censure is likely the strongest action the body can take against an individual regent, since its members are elected. The Detroit Free Press first reported on the possibility of a censure vote. Weiser did not return a request for comment.

The board’s move comes a week after Weiser was recorded calling Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson “witches.” Speaking to the North Oakland Republican Club on Thursday, the wealthy real estate magnate also said he’s recruiting GOP challengers to “soften up” the three Democrats so they’re “ready for the burning at the stake.” ....
