New self-portrait exhibition focuses on Black women photographers Curated by Ronan Mckenzie, the group show features self-portraits by 13 photographers as part of an exercise in reflection and self-observation 18/05/2021 7:59 am A new group show at north London arts space Home features original works by 13 photographers who have placed themselves in front of the lens. Held in partnership with WePresent, the exhibition, titled The Self Portrait, features myriad interpretations of the theme, which seek to illuminate the nuances and experiences of Black women photographers, but also stretch the notion of photography and self-portraiture. According to Ronan Mckenzie, who both curated the exhibition and features in it, the show is about “self-observation, reflection, and giving space and attention to the inner conversation that takes place when making a work”, and there are ample nods to the photographers’ creative process throughout.

Power of Black Identity brief.”  The winning photos will be showcased at Lambeth’s Power of Festival exhibition in June before being displayed on billboards across London in September. As well as marking the 40th anniversary of the 1981 Brixton riots, the exhibition honours one year since 2020’s historic Black Lives Matter protests.  The Power of Festival exhibition celebrates the power of Black identity and its lasting impact on British culture, and will run for two days from June 12 to 13 at Lambeth Town Hall. Alongside the display of competition winners’ photographs, the festival will see workshops by Black Girl Knit Club, Step Now, and Fred Perry, speeches about protest, Black culture, and the power of the next generation, and more.
