Holding onto Hope: CNIB Buddy Dog helps 8-year-old navigate his world


But little did her family know that the “Hope” on the horizon would be a Labrador retriever.
In the months after the diagnosis, Ollie lost his sight because of the disease. A short time later, he received a stem cell transplant from his older sister, Abby.
Feeling overwhelmed navigating cancer treatments and Ollie’s blindness, Dawn looked for resources to help her son and was pointed towards the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) and, more specifically, its Guide Dog program.
“When we heard about the program, it really did actually give him hope,” Dawn said. “It’s really hard when you have a seven-year-old, who’s that sick, to try and keep them motivated to want to go through all the pain and all the treatments.” Ollie knew he had to get better to take care of a dog, though, and that was the motivation he needed. ....

Ottawa pharmacies say they’re struggling to keep up with surging demand for COVID-19 vaccine appointments as their supplies of AstraZeneca doses dwindle and waitlists at some locations creep into the thousands.
Rahim Dhalla, owner of Hybrid Pharm in Westboro, says his store has already run out of the 200 doses it received last week after the provincial government announced it was expanding eligibility for vaccinations at pharmacies to those 40 or older.

Feds, province and city commit to funding playground upgrades; Bronson Centre and Carlington Community Health Centre to undergo renovations

Thirty parks in Ottawa will receive upgrades to playground equipment and other improvements while the city’s Bronson Centre and Carlington Community Health Centre will be renovated and expanded thanks to new funding from the federal, provincial and municipal governments announced Tuesday. 
The federal government is providing $3.5 million towards these projects, with the province committing $2.9 million. The City of Ottawa is offering up over $1.4 million for the park improvements, while the Bronson Centre and Carlington Community Health Centre will provide around $600,000 and $235,000 towards their renovations, respectively.

William Bourgault never suspected that cleaning out his closet last summer could help hundreds of kids in Ottawa get free shoes.
The 21-year-old Algonquin College student is the founder and operator of one of the city’s newest charitable groups: Footwear 4 Kids, which provides shoes, boots and everything in between to young people in need.
