Mining threatens South Africa s West Coast beaches March 2, 2021 | Environment Protect The West Coast (PTWC) welcomed a legal ruling in early February 2021 against Mineral Resources Commodities Limited (MRC) and Mineral Sands Resources Limited (MSR). MRC is a Western Australian mining company; MSR is a South African subsidiary of MRC. The Cape Town-based environmental Not-For-Profit Company (NPC) was formed to oppose increasing mining operations by MRC and other companies on the West Coast of South Africa. This ruling is a major coup for the environment and its protection, and we plan on using it to put more pressure on both the government and the miners by bringing more factual information into the public domain, said Mike Schlebach, the driving force behind PTWC. ....

South Africa boosts grape export forecast February 03 , 2021 South Africa has increased its table grape export forecast following very good quality and harvest conditions in the Northern Provinces and the three Western Cape production regions. In its third forecast, The South African Table Grape Industry (SATI) pegged expected volumes at between 65,3 million and 69,8 million cartons (4.5 kg equivalent), putting them on a similar level to the first forecast in late October. The forecast was cut in January after heavy rains at the start of the year hit the key Orange River region. In its latest update, SATI said the Northern Provinces are on track to reach higher intake volumes due to favorable summer weather towards the end of the season. ....

Image: Supplied The Kruger National Park (KNP) is still experiencing persistent rainfall and some of its rivers are flowing strongly after tropical storm Eloise. Isaac Phaahla, KNP spokesperson, said on Wednesday their technical teams will go out to assess how much damage was caused by the storm. “We will be able to update information after they have submitted a report. “Rain in still falling in the KNP but it is not very hard. The Olifants and Sabie rivers are flowing strongly. Low-level bridges are submerged in many areas, gravel roads are still closed and the Shimuwini, Sirhen and Biyamity bushveld camps are not operational though they are now accessible. ....

These mining companies seem to be operating with little regard for fragile coastal ecosystems and the concerns of local and recreational users. This has been playing out on South Africa’s West Coast – the arid, hauntingly beautiful stretch of otherwise largely untouched public and private farmland abutting the sparkling Atlantic Ocean stretching up to the Orange River – for decades. These mines litter large stretches of the coast, from north of the Olifants River to Alexander Bay on the Namibian border. ....
