Six enthusiastic volunteers arrived in a neighborhood off Green Valleyâs Abrego Drive on Friday to glean citrus from a late-harvest grapefruit tree called Old Betsy (best estimates place her at 45 years), coming from afar. They are part of Iskashitaa Refugee Network and have been living in the Tucson area from four months to five years. They are from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Cameroon, Nicaragua and Syria. Iskashitaa founder/director Barbara Eiswerth was also on deck, and group photographer Gretchen Crossley.  ....

It wasn t just that his many years of volunteerism, benefiting many different organizations have made the community a much better place, although they have, but it is the man himself - his wit, his charm, and his humor - who touched so many lives, that so many will miss. Marechal enlivened every event he organized and attended, and that included a large number of events, says Former Mayor Don Tatzin. With a calm manner, Marechal earned the fondness and commanded the respect of citizens because he knew what he was talking about, brought good ideas, and was kind and courteous to everyone. ....
Staff Report VENICE The Venice Museum and Venice Heritage are selling “Lost Buildings of Venice” tropical shirts. Venice Heritage commissioned a master Hawaiian print artist to design the shirts, which display lost architecture in the city. The shirts are made in the USA from fine high-thread count combed cotton and feature a matched pocket (on men’s shirts) and authentic coconut buttons. Sizes range from S-2XL for women and S-3XL for men. The shirt depicts seven buildings in Venice and one in Nokomis: Venice Beach Casino, Ringling Circus Arena, Gulf Theatre, Hotel Villa Nokomis, Park View Hotel, Horse & Chaise, Venice-Nokomis Presbyterian Church Drive-In, and Venice-Nokomis Bank. They are decorated with the John Nolen Plan of Venice, shark’s teeth, and the official city flower, a hibiscus. ....
