Hijab controversy: Kwara finally reopens 10 schools

The Kwara state government has announced the immediate reopening of the 10 schools recently shut down over hijab controversy even as its peace-building efforts continue.

According to NAN, Kemi Adeosun, permanent secretary, ministry of education and human capital development, broke the news in a statement on Wednesday.
The statement said the closure of the schools became necessary to forestall security breaches which may affect lives and properties.
“The government is convinced that its policy to allow willing Muslim schoolgirls to wear their hijab in public schools will lead to sustainable peace and communal harmony anchored on mutual respect and understanding,” it read. ....

Violence in Ilorin as Govt Orders Reopening of 10 Schools Without Resolving Hijab Issue

Violence Wednesday marred the reopening of 10 schools, originally owned by Christian Missions, shut by the Kwara state government over the use of Hijab as Christians and Muslims in Ilorin engaged themselves.
The government of Addulrahman AbdulRazaq had ordered the reopening of the affected schools on Wednesday to enable the students prepare for the upcoming external examinations, without resolving the Hijab issue.
There are fears that if the unfolding development is not urgently and carefully handled it could snowball into religious violence in a state known for peace and religious harmony.
At the Baptist Secondary School, Surulere, the situation was serious as security operatives had to disperse the Muslim and Christian leaders who threw stones at each other over the development. ....

How hijab controversy threatens Kwara's peace, education system


While the students lament their plight and concerns regarding their inability to pursue their education through no fault of theirs, their teachers, religious leaders and the government are entangled in the argument over the use of the hijab in grant-aided schools that are affiliated to Christians in the state.
The genesis of the crisis
The hijab conundrum between the Muslims and the Christians which began in 2013 has defied the intervention of the immediate past administration in the state and is presently giving the incumbent some headaches. From 2013, the case which had gone to the lower court that year went to appeal in 2016 and is before the Supreme Court, according to the chairman of the Kwara State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bishop Paul Olawoore. ....
