Making Fuel From Straw Is About to Become a Thing in Europe

(Bloomberg) Turning bales of straw into ethanol is about to become a highly profitable venture in Europe, according to a firm that just opened a production site in the continent. Clariant AG, a Swiss chemicals maker, just opened a facility in Romania to make so-called advanced biofuels, which use agricultural waste or non-edible crops to make fuels that can be blended into gasoline and diesel. That’s environmentally better than so-called first-generation ethanol currently on the market, which is made from foodstuffs like sugar or corn. The carbon savings from the new approach will make ethanol that’s more profitable compared with existing processes, Clariant Chief Executive Officer Conrad Keijzer said on a conference call. “We expect double the price to first generation,” he said. That’s “simply because it’s legislated,” he said. Clariant built the plant mainly to promote its technology, which it now wants to license to other companies. The European Union has set a ta ....

Norway to keep searching for oil and gas, new centre-left government says

By Victoria Klesty HURDAL, Norway (Reuters) - Norway will continue to explore for oil and gas in the next four years, with most new drilling permits to come in mature areas of the sea, the incoming centre-left government said on Wednesday. A minority coalition of the Labour Party and the rural Centre Party will take power on Thursday after defeating the Conservative-led government in last month s election. The Norwegian petroleum industry will be developed, not dismantled, the two parties said in a joint policy document, adding that it will maintain the existing system of handing out exploration licences. While climate change was a major issue debated during the campaign for parliament, Labour has said it wants to ensure any transition away from oil and gas, and the jobs it creates, towards green energy is a gradual one. Norway is western Europe s largest oil and gas producer, pumping around four million barrels of oil equivalent per day and deriving half its export revenues from hydro ....

Putin sees potential to work with Biden on energy, security and more

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday he saw potential to work with the United States on a host of issues from arms control to energy and that he had established a solid working relationship with President Joe Biden. Addressing an energy conference attended by top executives of Exxon Mobil and other oil majors, Putin was largely silent on the many disputes that have driven relations to post-Cold War lows, choosing instead to focus on the potential to mend fences. He said Russia was ready for constructive talks on arms control, and the two sides also had objective mutual interests in fighting terrorism and money laundering, combating tax havens and stabilising energy markets. These. will definitely lead one way or another to our relations being repaired, and the U.S. political establishment will stop speculating on U.S.-Russian relations to the detriment of its own interests and those of its companies, Putin added, referring to U.S. sanctions which he sai ....

France says EU visit to Iran critical to future of nuclear talks

PARIS (Reuters) - A pending visit to Tehran by the European Union s coordinator for talks to revive the Iran nuclear deal is vital to its future, France said on Wednesday, questioning the new hardline Iranian administration s commitment to salvaging the pact. Enrique Mora, the EU s political director, is due to hold talks on Thursday with members of Iran s nuclear negotiating team four months after talks stalled between Iran and world powers, including the United States, to revive the 2015 deal. Through its statements and actions on the ground, the new Iranian administration of President (Ebrahim) Raissi raises doubts about its intention to return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA), French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Anne-Claire Legendre told reporters in a daily online briefing. While refusing to negotiate, Iran creates facts on the ground that further complicate the return to the JCPoA. It is therefore in a context of crisis and at a critical moment for the future of ....

Firefighters battle blaze at southern Lebanon fuel storage tank

BEIRUT (Reuters) -Firefighters put out a blaze that raged for several hours at a gasoline storage tank in southern Lebanon on Monday, the latest blow to a nation grappling with crippling economic and fuel crises. There were no reports of casualties in the fire at the Zahrani oil facility on the Mediterranean coast, which had sent a huge column of smoke into the sky. Energy minister Walid Fayad said the fire resulted from a mistake while gasoline was being transported from one storage tank to another, the National News Agency (NNA) reported. We must await the results of the investigation into the causes of the fire, he added. A security source and a witness said the blaze had been put out after a battle that lasted most of the morning. Fire trucks from Beirut some 45 km (30 miles) away were ordered to go and help, the NNA reported. The gasoline belonged to the army, the prime minister s office earlier quoted Fayad as saying earlier. The army had diverted traffic away from the facility i ....
