Recent media focus on individual police shootings of Black victims gives a false impression of the overall reality. According to
The Washington Post’s database on police shootings, 18 unarmed Black people were killed by police in 2020 and 13 in 2019 in this country. In reality, about 26% of fatal police shootings in 2019 were of Black people. While this percentage is greater than Black Americans 13% share of the general population, it is less than the overall Black crime rate, according to FBI statistics. The notion that police shootings have been going up in recent years is not based on facts. For example, in 1971, New York City police officers discharged their weapons on the street 810 times. In the past five years, that number has fallen to below 100 discharges. According to Bureau of Justice statistics, there were 6.5 million police interactions with Black people in 20 ....
