JEFFERSONTOWN, Ky. A Taylorsville man is suing a Jeffersontown police officer after an incident at a McDonald’s.
In the lawsuit, Joseph Bennett said Officer Manuel Cruz sucker punched him for filming a situation involving police at the McDonald’s location on Bluegrass Parkway.
During a recent news conference, Jeffersontown Police Chief Rick Sanders said Cruz and other officers were working a check cashing scheme case at the restaurant when someone identified Bennett as being involved. ....

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) A Louisville man claims a Jeffersontown police officer aggressively confronted him while he recorded what he thought was a traffic stop, then sucker punched and improperly detained and charged him, according to a lawsuit filed Monday.
Joseph Bennett posed no threat and there was no need for physical force by Officer Manuel Cruz, according to the suit that also claims Bennett s First Amendment rights were violated. Cruz s conduct demonstrated an utter disregard for basic human rights.

In addition, the lawsuit in Jefferson Circuit Court claims Cruz had a known history of violent police behavior before the November 24 incident, which gained national attention after Bennett s video went viral. ....

J-Town chief says officer who struck bystander filming police 'could have done better'

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) Jeffersontown Police Chief Rick Sanders said an initial investigation shows his department needs additional training and could have better handled an incident where an officer struck, handcuffed and charged a bystander filming what he thought was a traffic stop.
We could have done better and hopefully will do better in the future, Sanders told reporters during a FridayÂ news conference.Â
The news conference followed the conclusion of an investigation into whether a crime was committed against Joe Bennett after he refused to show his identification to officers while he recorded a Facebook Live video of police from a parking lot across from a bank on Nov. 24.Â Â ....
