She refused to leave the class as directed by the teacher. she refused to follow his instructi instructions. he called for assistance from the school administrator, and the school administrator got there who is african-american, and he attempted to get her to leave the class can also. she refused his instruction, and continued to be disrespectful to him. all of the while, the students are in the class. they are supposed to be there to be learning. their education was put on hold while this disruptive student had to be dealt with. at that point, school resource officer ben fields was called. situation was explained to him, he attempted to get the student to leave. he was then asked to remove her from the class. and at that point, i think that we have seen the various videos. i will note that the teacher and the school administrator and ....
Discredit on the sheriff s department or him or that school. he tried to do his job. that is what he feels like he did, he tried to do his job, and it happened very quickly. his actions, if he had to do the it all over gangs, he would is are done it personally. did you speak to him personally? yes, i spoke to him personally. and as for lay people who have not had law enforcement training, and how do you do that correctly, and you don t obviously throw her out of the chair, but how do you get her out if she is not going to get out of the seat. well, first, you would try some verbal communication, and physical force would be the last resort. she wasn t a danger at that point. she was just being noncompliant, and disrespectful. you try to the use a verbal ....
Interesting to note that according to the sheriff both the teacher and the one administrator who was in the classroom at the time actually support ben fields here. during that news conference, i was glancing back at the high school behind me to see if there is any reaction there, and so far, none, either in a spontaneous way or any official announcement. it is obvious that any officer losing their job, regardless for the reason is not a point that somebody is going to be celebrating. so we continue to monitor, and this is not unexpected, and in fact, everybody in the community, probably inside of that school knew that this officer s days were numbered the moment that video got the out. and mo canady in your relationship as association of school officers, i know that your group did not train this school resource officer, and it does not train the school resource officers in the state, and you know the business and ....
Steps to take to de-escalate that situation before you ever get to the point of havingforce. that is what we are about teaching, and not just tactics, but the de-escalation techniques. and i want to talk about the de-escalation, because people were appalled of the event, and they said that this is the third attempt of de-escalation for this student, and she was having no part of it. the sheriff happened to mention that there was another option for this school resource officer, and that is something called pain compliance. but pain compliance on a video could have looked just as catastrophic, do you agree? well, there are many things on video that look horrible, and at the end of the day, we find that they are not necessarily as horrible as they looked. i am not suggesting that in this incident, but what i am suggesting is that there are still some things that possibly could have been done from the de-escalation standpoint. ....
