It is snowing heavily in Ask, a village 25km (15 miles) north-east of the capital Oslo, where homes toppled into a giant chasm caused by flowing mud. Police commander Roy Alkvist said one or two house in the chasm appear safe for rescuers to potentially enter. Helicopters have been searching the scene of Wednesday s landslide. A missing dog was rescued on Thursday. In Friday s operation the eight Swedish rescuers and their Norwegian colleagues plan to use an army vehicle called a paver , which has a giant steel bridge on which rescuers can move, Norway s Aftenposten daily reports.

The landslide struck a residential area in the municipality of Gjerdrum, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) north of the capital Oslo. Police said more than 900 people had been evacuated from the area. Rescue workers continued to search the area for children and adults who were feared to have been caught in mud and debris, police said.
