Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock toured the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park in Macon on Monday, recognizing the importance of the park in the broader Ocmulgee River Corridor with an announcement of a bipartisan effort to make the park Georgia's first national park and preserve.
The study, which evaluated the 50-mile-long river corridor and adjacent areas between Macon and Hawkinsville, recognizes the area's national importance but indicates challenges in making it a part of the National Park System.
Although there are nationally significant resources along a 50-mile stretch of the Ocmulgee River in Georgia to protect through its addition to the National Park System, the National Park Service concluded that the area poses land-acquisition challenges and could be better managed by others.
