Currents that move east to west right around the equatorial region and they are very strong currents. it s not out of the realm of possibility that a wing of this size could actually have found its way into the surface currents and drifted those 2300 miles ending up on reunion island and certainly we ve seen things like this following the japan tsunami. it s certainly possible that this is from the malaysia airlines flight. i think it s also very important for us to understand here that there s a lot of debris out there beyond from just this wreckage. right. if you recall a year ago, you know there were many false alarms. i think it s important for us to be certain but certainly from an oceanographic perspective, it is possible. well and staying with you on the oceanographic perspective, if you were to find a piece of a plane, aren t they typically found in clusters? i m wondering if they found this one piece, how quickly, then if it is it they will begin to ....

At depths for short periods due to health concerns and does indonesia have what it takes to have the recovery of this. there are questions about the debris. when you re out there, it s huge. david gallot with oceanographic, usually, you re extremely careful to say you ve found something until you ground truthed it. in the crash of air france flight 447 off brazil s northeastern coast whose black boxes took almost two years to recover, footnoting what a pain staking process this can be. on the other hand this crash occurred much less water which raises the possibility that it will be easier to get all the pieces. still, there are concerns quite frankly, of souvenir hunters because this is much less water it s even a possibility that recreational divers might go and try to bring pieces out. that s a concern. i hadn t even thought about that and it s a horrible thing to think of that possibility. i m sure it s very real. ....

Squares and you need to find clues whether that s debris floating and plug in as much data as you can into that search pattern grid meaning current and winds. so if you find a piece of debris say, today, and they know that the winds and currents are moving in a west to east direction at so many knots, they can predict where that floated from. if that s moving at one or two knots or half a knot they can do the math and move that piece of debris back in time. again, current changes. wind changes. but they can take as much of that meteorological data and oceanographic data and plug it into the model and narrow down an area to where you actually search for wreckage if there is any, or more debris for that matter. tim, what about the technology that they d be using in the search? obviously we re focusing on a surface search right now so we re not talking about the towed pinger locaters at this point. in terms of anything that might ....

Have we learned, is there silt? is it mountainous? is it flat? what do we know about this area? well, i think this is an area that is new to man. we obviously have a great asset in the oceanographic vessel, hms echo. that s the start of the oceanographic that can assist in the mapping of the bottom there. but on the symmetry that i ve seen, it s not sharply mountainous or anything. it s more flat and almost rolling but we understand from other work that was done some years ago that that part of the indian ocean has a lot of silt on the bottom. and if we have silt on the bottom, that can be quite ....
