The Western Cape government last week said that the number of vaccination sites in the province will increase to 53 as of Monday, 24 May 2021, with more to come. This is part of the province’s scale-up approach where they will bring more sites online regularly, to significantly increase the number of vaccinations administered daily.

More than 167,000 people were vaccinated in the first week of Phase Two of South Africa’s Covid-19 vaccine roll-out. They received just the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. The roll-out was given a boost over the weekend, with the finding that the Pfizer vaccine can be stored in a refrigerator for a month. Previously, it was estimated that the vaccine would last in a standard fridge for only five days, but new data prove otherwise. The change was approved by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority after its counterparts in Europe and the US made the same call. The Western Cape will introduce 17 more public vaccination sites next week, bringing the total number of operational public sector sites to 36. In addition, 4 private sites at Medi Clinic hospitals will also come online while the rural health teams will commence with vaccine outreach at old age homes. In the coming week, there will be a total of 36 public and 11 private vaccination sites operating.

The province’s Department of Health will bring 23 more public vaccination sites online, bringing the total of public vaccination sites to 42. The private sector will have 11 sites operational as of Monday, with Mediclinic bringing online four additional sites.
