About 45 minutes ago or so, 12:15 p. M. Right along the coast of rhode island, henri maximum sustained winds reached 60 miles an hour at landfall. The state is bracing for heavy impact over next few hours including widespread power outages with tens of thousands of people already in the dark. Last hour the mayor of newport told me she is worried about storm surge and flooding. We have a concern about the surge and the high tides. We already pass one high tide and all the dots, the water was right up on it. If we have rain all day and we have another high tide with the full moon tonight, chances are we re going to have some flooding throughout new port. You re looking right now at an earth cam shot. Winds. We re seeing proof of that right now. Your camera operator is having trouble keeping a steady camera on you. Give me a sense as henri moves in. Reporter: hey, alex, good afternoon to you. I have to wedge myself in between the balcony here so i don t blow away. The winds have started to pick up. I m not feeling a drop of rain which is interesting. Earlier this morning we were getting hit by heavy rain and high winds but the winds have intensified extremely. I want to show you, though, how much things are blowing around. You might see the light pole behind me shaking. This is ocean road and it is blocked off. It is a dangerous situation. You see the waves crashing along the wall. There is a little bit of spillover and that is what folks need to avoid. You do see some folks walking around taking this all in. It s probably a good idea to stay at home. Reporter: we expect to hear the president, when he speaks, try to change the focus from the rough initial phase of this drawdown and this evacuation, on to the progress that the white house feels they have made over the last 72 hours or so, in ramping up what they are calling one of the largest airlift operations in history. So they are going to be pointing to some of the numbers that show that they re getting more and more people out of afghanistan, including about 3900 people in the most recent 24hour period, according to the white house, who were airlifted on u. S. Military aircraft making for a total of 25,000 since august 14th, who versus airlifted on military as well as commercial flights.
