CO2 Emissions Increase Ocean Acidity
The 8th of January (08.01) was chosen to be the Ocean Acidification Day of Action because 8.1 is the current pH of the ocean. Global ocean acidification is a clear illustration of one of the profound effects of sustained climate change. This phenomenon is changing the chemistry of our oceans and affecting the health of many marine animals, some of which people rely on for their livelihood and for food.
The International Atomic Energy Agency s Ocean Acidification International Coordination Centre (OA-ICC) is using nuclear and nuclear-derived technologies to better understand and address this important issue. According to Peter Swarzenski from the IAEA in Monaco: With our international partners, this project plays a key role bringing together global leaders in ocean acidification science and policy. Together, we enable Member States to positively engage in ocean c ....

Scientists to Brainstorm On Raising Ocean Acidification, Research Gaps in Africa

Ocean Acidification.
A group of scientists are expected to converge in Monrovia on January 8, 2021, to create a one-day awareness on the Ocean Acidification Day and research gaps in Africa.
The tomorrow’s event will be hosted by the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Liberia in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency Ocean Acidification International Coordination Center (IAEA OA-ICC).
Ocean acidification often referred to as “the other CO
2 problem”, is a perturbation of ocean chemistry due to human CO
2 emission. It has been shown to be a major threat to marine ecosystems worldwide and is the focus of the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14.3. Since 2015, African scientists are actively collaborating to address this issue by advancing ocean acidification research throughout the continent as part of the OA-Africa network. ....
