"Probabilistic modelling of occupants' thermostat preferences for resid" by Dilini Wickrama Achchige, Dong Chen et al.

Fixed thermostat setpoints and schedules are commonly used in residential building energy simulation and rating. While this approach is simple to implement, it does not represent occupants with varying preferences. In this study, based on field data from 102 households in three Australian cities, two alternative thermostat setting approaches were investigated. The first method (Probability Distribution Approach) uses all the values in a thermostat settings probability distribution generated from the field data. This was compared with a more straightforward method, where the thermostat settings were derived by applying weighted average thermostat settings. Both approaches were benchmarked against a series of simulations that used randomly generated thermostat settings with the same thermostat settings probability distributions. Results show that the Probability Distribution Approach matches better the benchmarking results (CV(RMSE) 1-8%) than the weighted average method (CV(RMSE) 9-37%) ....

Frontiers | School Building Energy Assessment Using Lean Energy Management Strategies

In Malaysia, there are approximately 10,2200 government schools and these schools’ electricity bills are under the responsibility of the Ministry of Education Malaysian Government. The demand for energy use is expected to rise dramatically in the coming years due to many factors such as the increasing number of students enrolment and the demand for a comfortable indoor environment in response to global climate effects. Therefore, there are many ideas, concepts, and technologies that have been introduced towards energy conservation in buildings. This study aims to identify key implementation of energy conservation measures and audit energy consumption of five (5) secondary schools. Case studies derived from schools that participated in Energy Efficiency Challenge hosted by Energy Commission. It was found that the school’s usage of electricity exceeded their need. Based on the implementation of energy management conservation measures throughout 2016 to 2019, there were gradual reduct ....

"Identification of environmental and contextual driving factors of air " by Bongchan Jeong, Jungsoo Kim et al.

Abstract
Air conditioning (A/C) is generally responsible for a significant proportion of total building energy consumption. However, occupants’ air conditioning usage patterns are often unrealisti-cally characterised in building energy performance simulation tools, which leads to a gap between simulated and actual energy use. The objective of this study was to develop a stochastic model for predicting occupant behaviour relating to A/C cooling and heating in residential buildings located in the Subtropical Sydney region of Australia. Multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate the probability of using A/C in living rooms and bedrooms, based on a range of physical environmental (outdoor and indoor) and contextual (season, day of week, and time of day) factors observed in 42 Sydney region houses across a two‐year monitoring period. The resulting models can be implemented in building energy performance simulation (BEPS) tools to more accurately predict indoor enviro ....
