Noyes Library Celebrates Earth Day with StoryWalk on 'Rainbow Weaver'

In celebration of Earth Day, families can stroll through Capitol View-Homewood Local Park located at 2929 Edgewood Road in Kensington while following a self-guided adventure with the book,
Rainbow Weaver by Linda Elovitz Marshall and illustrated by Elisa Chavarri.
Bilingual signs will be posted from April 17 through May 15. This is the fourth outdoors Noyes StoryWalk and is sponsored by The Noyes Children’s Library Foundation and presented with the cooperation of Montgomery Parks and the Oakland Terrace Elementary School PTA. The park is adjacent to Oakland Terrace, an MCPS Spanish-English immersion school.
Rainbow Weaver, which is told in both Spanish and English on each spread in the book, focuses on a young girl who wants to weave like her mother and the women of her Guatemalan village but doesn’t have materials. She discovers that she can weave with plastic bags littering the village and then sell her weaving to ....

Shakia Chavies killed in Atlanta house fire on Oakland Terrace


The medical examiner has not yet released the 26-year-old victim s cause of death.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner s Office said, on Sunday, that 26-year-old Shakia Chavies was the victim found in the fire, which occurred in the 1200 block of Oakland Terrace SW around 8:15 p.m. At this time, an official cause of death has not been released publicly.
Battalion Chief Matt Driver said that the first arriving crews saw heavy flames burning through the front of the home. And while, with the help of a second unit, they were able to quickly extinguish the fire, they were unable to save Chavies or three dogs that were inside at the time. ....

ATLANTA Atlanta Fire has confirmed that one person has been found dead at the scene of a house fire on Saturday evening.
Battalion Chief Matt Driver said that the first arriving crews to the 1200 block of Oakland Terrace SW found heavy flames burning through the home around 8:15 p.m. He said much of the fire was coming from the front of the house.
A second unit was on the scene within four minutes and fire crews were able to get the blaze under control fairly quickly. However, upon entering the home, they made a heartbreaking discovery. ....

HARTFORD A city woman died after being hit by a vehicle in a hit-and-run crash on Albany Avenue late Friday night, according to police.
Police identified the victim as Kedine Campbell, of Vine Street. She turned 32 the day before the accident.
It was shortly before midnight Friday when patrol officers were dispatched for a reported pedestrian hit by a vehicle in the 1000 block of Albany Avenue, police said.
Officers found the 32-year-old unresponsive in the roadway. Police said the vehicle that hit the woman fled before officers arrived. ....
