With love and firmness, Daisy Newman taught young musicians to succeed

A chorus of young singers, ranging in age from 8 to 18, drawn from some of the most poverty-stricken neighborhoods of the Bay Area, raise their voices in harmony, delivering a range of repertoire encompassing both jazz and classical offerings.
Then they leave their risers, move to seats at the front of the stage, and pick up their instruments. Because these kids are not only a chorus they’re an orchestra, too.
Since 2013, when it parted ways with UC Berkeley’s Young Musicians Program and went out on its own, the Young Musicians Choral Orchestra has been creating musical and educational opportunities for disadvantaged youths. It’s an organization with a powerful multiple mission part conservatory, part psychological support system, part economic lifeline. ....

West Edge Opera selects new commission with help from subscribers

One composer wants to write an opera based on family history, telling the story of her Korean great-aunt who went on a fatal hunger strike rather than be coerced into an arranged marriage. Other creative plans include a mythic treatment of ancient Egyptian gods, a magic-realist opus about an orphanage for fire victims and a black comedy about the misdeeds of “Florida Man” during the 2000 presidential recount. ....

The challenges musicians face to keep their skills sharp and make a living during the pandemic have been well-documented. But conductors have an extra set of obstacles.
Unlike their comrades who play within the symphony, they can’t spend their sheltered-in-place hours practicing their instrument, which is the orchestra itself. The technology is still being perfected for fluid remote performances by just two musicians, and those multi-panel viral videos of classical instrumentalists playing a piece together are marvels of digital editing as much as of performance. The postproduction combining of individual instrumentalists, while its own art, is the antithesis of live conducting. ....
