Congresswoman Barbara Lee kicked off the Club’s celebration by sharing her memories and reflections about Hon. Shirley Chisholm who died in January of 2005. Since Chisholm became the first Black woman elected to Congress, there have only been 20 Black women elected to Congress in the history of this country. Oakland makes up 66% of Assembly District 18. Yet all the other major candidates live in Alameda or San Leandro. Our district has not had a representative from Oakland since the 1990s.
