This emerged last week from interviews with some of the country’s top paediatricians, virologists and public health specialists. They were speaking after the health department said during Global Immunisation Week that its child hexavalent and measles inoculation doses fall below acceptable targets for maximum effect. The hexavalent vaccine protects children against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), poliomyelitis, Haemophilus influenza type B and hepatitis B. ....

The drive, aimed at children below the age of five, began with 12 districts identified by the department of health as being in urgent need of catching up. The plan was for these 12 districts to catch up by the end of January, after which the rest of the country would follow. However, it appears that the drive did not meet its targets in the priority districts by the end of January, and not all 12 districts started on time. Spotlight has only seen data on progress in the priority districts up to January. Despite several requests, we have not been able to access more recent data or data for the rest of the country. ....
