This April at the Otis Library on Main Street in Norwich, Harris Sisters Month recognizes the courage and achievements of Norwich natives Sarah and Mary Harris.
The sisters were among the first Black students at Prudence Crandall s Canterbury school; indeed, the root of this experiment in integration was Sarah s request in 1832 which Crandall granted to take classes at the then all-white academy. The consequences, including violence and the eventual closing of the school, constitute one of the most significant chapters in American abolitionist history.
Following the closing of the school, Sarah and Mary continued to lead distinguished lives marked by audacity and purpose, Sarah as an abolitionist in Rhode Island and Mary as an educator in Louisiana. ....

Historically Speaking: Lecture will discuss Norwich Black Governors

In collaboration with the Connecticut League of History Organization, the Norwich Historical Society is sponsoring a free virtual winter lecture series based on topics from our Walk Norwich Trail system (walknorwich.org). The four-part lecture series is from January to April and is free and open to the public. The lectures will be recorded and available on our website and social media platforms for on-demand viewing.
In honor of Black History month, our second lecture will focus on topics from the Norwich Freedom Trail. Kerima Lewis will present the lecture: The Reign of Black Governors in Norwich, Connecticut, and Beyond. This talk will discuss a tradition that emerged in Colonial New England during the 18th century when enslaved Africans elected their own kings and governors when denied basic liberties including the right to vote. Many of these elected Black officials were African royalty and heirs to a throne in their homeland.   ....

Jail Hill District is loosely described on the Internet as Cedar Street in Norwich, but that area encompasses much more than that.
Jail Hill gets its rather unoriginal name after a jail that was built on a hill there in 1834, which stood between Fountain and Cedar streets. The jailhouse overlooked the city’s downtown area. If you want to see the original spot, it’s a currently vacant lot at 16 Cedar St.
The roughly 37-acre district included the areas of School, John, Fountain, Cedar, Happy, and Old Division streets. Development of the area began in the 1830s and was largely complete by 1865 after the Civil War. ....
