It has risen by 1159 since the 2nd of august. That is a significant week, when the riots began. As you are aware, lots of new people have entered in the Criminaljustice System so you can see here, from 26th Ofjuly 87400 and that number has continued to rise throughout the weeks of august until they have reached the new Record High 88,521. This comes at a time when thousands of offenders who served 40 of their Prison Terms will be eligible for early release. It is necessary, says the government, because of severe overcrowding injails. There are fewer than 500 spaces now left in men s prison in england and wales, made worse by the convictions of hundreds of people convicted in the riots of last month. We have been given access. The Prison Population in england and wales has hit a record high for the second week in a row. The latest figures show there are now more than 88,500 inmates. Thats a rise of almost 1,200 in five weeks. Around half of those are cases linked to this summers riots. In a few days time, the governments temporary early Release Scheme will begin, and some offenders will be able to leave jail at an earlier point in their sentences. Its the longest Prison Sentence that has been handed down so far after the wave of riots that swept parts of england and Northern Ireland last month. 27 year old Thomas Birley from rotherham has been sent to jail for nine years after helping to set fire to a Hotel Housing Asylum seekers in the town and attacking Police Officers in august.
