The Salem Board of Health issued a public advisory on Monday afternoon, raising the alarm about a local uptick in COVID-19 cases.
“The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has notified us of 34 new cases in only 26 days,” the board wrote in its advisory. “Of these cases about half were identified as breakthrough cases, individuals who are fully vaccinated and the rest were in unvaccinated cases.”
The board called the local uptick “a troubling trend as infection rates increase.” The news comes as federal and state health agencies report the Delta variant of COVID-19 is spreading, making up 83% of new infections in the United States.
