JACKSON, Miss. (AP) Two Mississippi high school seniors are being recognized for their academic achievement with a special honor from the White House.
Matthew Landon Yin from Madison Central High School and Emmanuelle Rachel Teng from Oxford High School have been named U.S. presidential scholars, according to a news release from the Mississippi Department of Education.
“Mississippi’s presidential scholars have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to academics, leadership and community service during an extraordinary time,” State Superintendent of Education Carey Wright said in the release.
The program recognizes 161 high school seniors for their accomplishments in academics, the arts and career and technical education fields. ....

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) The coronavirus vaccine is now available for children ages 12 to 15 in Mississippi for the first time, a development the state s top health official told residents he hopes will “shake us out of our complacency” in battling COVID-19.
“I want us all to really sit back and realize that you’re likely either to get the COVID vaccine, or the COVID virus,” State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said Thursday during a virtual briefing with the Department of Health. “And under every circumstance, under every conceivable scenario, you are a thousand-fold, if not a million-fold better off getting the vaccine than contracting COVID.” ....

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) The Mississippi Department of Mental Health says it is fulfilling requirements to provide community-based services, and it is asking a federal judge not to order the state to make changes in its mental health system.
The federal government issued a letter in 2011 saying Mississippi had done too little to provide mental health services outside mental hospitals. The Justice Department sued the state in 2016. After a 2019 trial, U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves ruled Mississippi “operates a system that unlawfully discriminates against persons with serious mental illness.” ....
