GOP lawmakers call on McKee to stop state hospital discharges
PROVIDENCE Two Republican lawmakers whose districts include the state-run Zambarano Hospital have asked Gov. Dan McKee to stop the discharge of patients, and reinstate admissions, while an investigation by Disability Rights Rhode Island of recent money-saving activities at the hospital is underway.
McKee has not yet responded to their pleas.
In their letter, Sen. Jessica de la Cruz and Rep. David Place voiced concern to McKee that you are not being fully informed of the true nature of the situation.
It has become apparent that there is an organized effort on the part of [the Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals] to discharge acute care patients when there is nowhere else capable of caring for them. ....

PROVIDENCE In a development rarely seen, doctors past and present at the state hospital are speaking out against the former Raimondo administration s unethical moves to save money by kicking out patients, closing off admissions and laying off staff.
One of the doctors is days away from leaving. The other has already resigned. He was the medical director of the Zambarano campus of the Eleanor Slater Hospital.
After exhausting all efforts to reason with administration and explain why what they were asking was not only impossible but unethical, I felt forced to resign, Dr. Michele Paquet told The Journal.
In a letter made public by legislators, retired physician administrator/medical director Normand L. Decelles Jr. alleged hospital administrators began planning the closure last year under the guise the services were not needed. ....
