Sales of parking passes raise enough funds to fully support Alberta ski trails

CALGARY
Cross-country skiers will be able to enjoy some excellent trails in Kananaskis Country as well as some peace of mind for the rest of the winter season.
That s because enough money has been raised through a pilot program to sustain ski trail grooming work throughout the area for the remainder of 2020-21 s season.
The announcement comes from Nordiq Alberta, the organization that has been working with the Ministry of Environment and Parks to groom the kilometres of cross-country ski trails.
It says approximately 7,700 parking passes (5,200 season and 2,500 day) have been sold to date, which meant about $270,000 in net sales. ....

A cross-country skiing group says its volunteers have collected $160,000 of the $200,000 it set out to raise to ensure that nordic ski trails keep getting groomed in popular areas of Kananaskis Country after the Alberta government cut funding for the service.

Albertaâs government has secured or maintained partnerships for 170 parks and public recreation area sites across the province under a model that began in 1932.
As a result, no sites included under the Budget 2020 optimization plan will be delisted. All will remain open and accessible to Albertans. All will retain their current designations and associated protections.
âMany Albertans, including myself, love and value our parks and wild spaces. With more Albertans than ever staying in the province, now is the ideal time to ensure we all have access to these spaces and that they remain protected. I am grateful for the hard work of our parks partners and look forward to keeping our parks system sustainable for future generations.â ....
