Owned from new, my 13-year-old BMW 118i has been superb but it’s time for a newer model. Reports of unreliability with the latest 1-series make me wonder whether I should consider something else. I thought about a Mini Cooper, Countryman or Clubman, but the differences are very confusing – and they are also made by BMW. I travel about 6,000 miles a year and need an automatic gearbox. Emission impossible
When London’s ultra low emissions zone (ULEZ) is extended this October, I will be just inside and faced with a £12.50 daily charge. I drive a 1994 W124 Mercedes 320 petrol estate which I have owned from new. The DVLA system says it does not meet the required emissions levels, but as it is so old I have been told they don’t have the data so just enter it as non-compliant. Is this true and, if so, can an emissions test be undertaken to see whether it complies? As an aside, are W124 Mercedes estates increasing in value, as I know the coupé versions are coveted? PO ....
