Ten children's books for Autism Acceptance Month

Every April, autistic people and members of the autism community campaign to raise awareness, improve understanding and cultivate acceptance of autistic people in society. The initiative is known as Autism Acceptance Month and was founded by autistic disability rights activist Paula C Durbin-Westby in 2011. In honour of Autism Acceptance Month, here is a selection of ten engaging, insightful, and neuro-affirmative books about autism for young readers. Affirmative portrayals of autism in literature are essential for enhancing our collective understanding of the autistic experience. This belief is what inspired me to write my own novel, Freya Harte is Not a Puzzle (for age 13+), which was published by the O’Brien Press last month. Written from my own autistic perspective, it tells the story of a teenage girl learning to embrace her autistic self. Like the other books listed here, I hope it is an enjoyable and insightful read. Happy Autism Acceptance Month!

The Children's Books That Shaped 2020

The children’s books that shaped 2020 Recommendations The children’s books that shaped 2020 It’s been a world-changing year, one that shaped the meaning of what made a successful children’s book. From empowering journals to diverse and inclusive stories, we’ve rounded up the ones that told the story of 2020. Released only weeks before the UK went into its first lockdown, Struan Murray’s fantastical debut Orphans of the Tide is set in a city similar to Murray’s hometown of Edinburgh – except that the majority of the city is now underwater. The people believe this catastrophic flooding was caused by a fearsome god know as The Enemy, and when a mysterious boy washes ashore – within the body of a dead whale – the citizens are convinced he must be a vessel for this destructive god. Reminiscent of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series, it s an ideal book for fantasy fans seeking an alternate reality to disappear into.
