President going up to capitol hill on one occasion. but more often, senators coming to the white house for these in-person meetings and when that happens, we usually can see them coming and going. we have a sense for how long they are sitting down and talking with one another but this is an unusual step. the president welcoming senator manchin, as well as senator schumer to his home in wilmington. we know the president likes to get away from washington when he can. well, today, washington literally came to him at a really key point. we have heard from the president and other officials throughout the week significant optimism. they feel like they are on a path toward getting to the finish line but one of those key stumbling blocks has been the final price tag. senator manchin has really been clear that he thinks the most he is willing to budge beyond is about 1.75 trillion. the white house has been talking a little bit of a higher number. so that would be, obviously, one of the key poin ....
Obviously, there are only 50 democratic senators and they need to reach an agreement with all of them. joe manchin was not somebody running for president who put out a expansive policy platform. but this was something that was core to the democratic base. you know, repealing the trump tax cuts. expanding medicare. free community college. we heard it from across the democratic spectrum. from more moderate capped dates like joe biden to elizabeth warren and bernie sanders. the rhetoric we hear on the campaign trail as democratic priorities, when push comes to shove, they often don t make it over the finish line because of the complicated negotiations going on here in washington and on capitol hill. and so, i think that is an important point to recognize just how important and fundamental these were to the democratic platform that are ultimately not going to make it into final passage. mike memoli, tyler page, thank guys both. we are going to be watching for developments coming out of t ....
In wilmington, delaware, is this is the first time the president has brought people outside of washington. this is a tactic we have seen other presidents use, whether that s camp david or other presidential retreats i think it s noteworthy he is finally bringing people to his home to really try to close this deal. obviously, he is heading overseas later this week and it s an imperative from his perspective they get a deal done or at least a framework before he headings overseas. can we talk about that for a moment? kind of the informal way in which they had this meeting in the president s own personal home, versus having this meeting at the white house. what does that really do to negotiations? what is the strategy here, i should say, on behalf of the president? will, what s so interesting about it, yasmin, is it is taking a page from the manchin playbook. we have seen so often senator manchin as a key broker in noerkszs in washington. sometimes between democrats and republicans, a ....
Among democrats. and what manchin has talked so often about is how he likes to break the ice and bring lawmakers to the house boat. that he has just outside washington. it s a more relaxed, more informal setting where they can maybe come to an agreement and in a different way. it s easier there than in the sort of confines of the marble and ornate halls of the capitol or grandeur of the white house. so i think part of what the president may be trying to do is take a more comfortable, relaxed setting but i think something tyler raised is also an issue here, which is there is only so many days left in the calendar for the president to get to that framework or a final vote before he heads off to yufrp. we are all counting the days till we head to rome with the president later this week. so he wants to feel more comfortable about where this is heading and that s why you got to give up a sunday sometimes to try oh get thoo point. i do it every week. by the way, what happens in the house b ....
