Merv Andrews the consummate racing all-rounder

Supplied Merv Andrews Happily returns to the birdcage after his Grand National Hurdles victory on Gay Fellow at Riccarton in 1950. OPINION: Merv Andrews was not only one of the most respected racing trainers in the land, he was one of only a few to train and ride a New Zealand Cup winner. This is the Merv Andrews who won 101 races as a jockey on the flat and over fences and a further 541 as a trainer, putting him in the vicinity of Manawatū racing greats Eric Temperton, Noel Eales and Eric Ropiha. Approaching his 93rd birthday, Andrews lives on in good health in Palmerston North, still follows the races and has interests in two young horses.

Former All Blacks selector Peter Thorburn dies following short illness

Thorburn also worked at English club Bristol between 2001 and 2003 as a director of rugby and coached the United States national side when it participated in the 2007 World Cup. Our thoughts go to the family and friends of Peter who was such an instrumental person in the formation of the Union, but also so respected for more than just his coaching by all rugby people, said North Harbour Rugby chairman Gerard van Tilborg said in a statement. Peter was always an astute thinker around the game. He was inspirational to a huge number of players and coaches creating many original and creative plays which became a hallmark of North Harbour rugby with high entertainment and player flair. He will be well remembered fondly and missed by all who knew him.
