These democratic senators who we just spoke to moments ago said that doesn t sound like it s possible but perhaps this white house meeting could be the place where they finalize things and work things out. things are happening very rapidly. now, the obvious question is, what are they discussing? my understanding from democratic sources is that harry reid went into the meeting with mitch mcconnell offering broadly to fund the government till close to the end of the year, mid-december, and to extend the debt ceiling for maybe pab six to nine months. we don t know what happened when mitch mcconnell came back to him. that is the key. republicans are trying very hard to get something from this. and just raising the debt ceiling pretty long-term, six to nine months and funding the government through the end of the year from their perspective politically doesn t get them very much. we ll see if there s any give on reid s part. he has been one of the real big drivers of this no negotiation ....

The republicans way actually as this no negotiation stance by the white house and senator reid continues. in the senate, behind the scenes, what s going on? well, i think the one thing that has been notable is you have seen folks like rob portman, bob corker, john mccain, some of the more deal-making inclined senators, not necessarily moderate, trying to refocus whether it s within senate features or even behind the scenes background talks with other democrats. trying to refocus the debate away from obama care and back to spending and tax reform, again, the spending level of the cr and making sure that the sequestration cuts stay in there. now, again, that s a challenge because as you know the tea party faction both in the house and certainly senator ted cruz and mike lee have just been completely focused on obama care. that has made this tough because in the past, think about it, usually these negotiations get stuck over numbers. so there is some way to split the difference whether ....

Washington d.c. the house apparently passed a bill that would fund the national park service to keep, you know, projects, to keep properties like that open to. fund the national institutes of health. it s the sort of very small, microtargetted bills that the house has now passed, and yet they are being criticized for doing so by the other side. what s that all about? well, it s interesting, jon. the memorial toast controversy has helped republicans. they re playing a tough hand here, but they re also active. house republicans have been passing a flurry of bills, and one of the things that was interesting about yesterday is that democrats had said we re not negotiating, you ve got to pass a clean government funding bill, and then we saw an offer from harry reid it was rejected by republicans, but it was interesting that this no negotiation stance might have gotten some second thoughts from some democrats. and then you have, of course, president obama called the meeting at the whit ....
