Stepping Up: These Vermonters of Color Want to Bring Their Perspectives to Local Office


Thomas Franco was an aspiring doctor when he realized that his real passion was policy.
While a premed student at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, Franco volunteered at a free health clinic outside of Cleveland. Talking to the patients helped him recognize the societal inequities that lead to poverty and, in turn, poor health outcomes.
It was just like this moment where I realized,
OK, if I m going to make a difference, and I am going to change the narrative here, I have to dig deeper, Franco said.
That change in direction ultimately helped lead 25-year-old Franco to Rutland, where he lives with his partner, George Hodulik. A first-time candidate, Franco is one of 17 people including three incumbents running for six at-large seats on the city s board of aldermen.  ....

Curbside testing staff at Northwestern Medical Center adapt and serve


ST. ALBANS — As the number of COVID-19 cases continue to rise across Vermont this fall, the laboratory technicians and medical staff of Northwestern Medical Center’s Curbside Collection site remain diligent and optimistic.
“It is a real honor to be able to serve the community in this capacity,” says Jessica Scanlon, a laboratory assistant who helps organize the daily ebb and flow of the Curbside Collection Site.
“We have a very fine-tuned system right now,” Scanlon said, following months of tweaking the lab testing procedures, monitoring volume capacity and meeting staffing needs throughout the ongoing pandemic.
Prior to the national resurgence of COVID-19 cases, the St. Albans curbside site hit peak testing levels in August, with about 450-550 weekly tests being processed during October.
